OpenAI GPT-Rosalind finds cholesterol transport lead in neurons

According to OpenAI via Greg Brockman and the linked OpenAI blog, GPT-Rosalind mapped mouse-brain gene expression in 32 minutes to propose impaired cholesterol transport as a testable mechanism tied to DCTN1 and Perry syndrome, highlighting new neurodegeneration drug targets with PerturbAI and Scripps Research.

Analysis

OpenAI's GPT-Rosalind system has identified a potential new lead in drug discovery for neurodegenerative disorders by analyzing gene-expression data from millions of mouse brain cells.

According to a post by Greg Brockman on X, the effort involved thousands of GPT-Rosalind agents working in parallel with PerturbAI and Scripps Research. The agents connected results from mouse-brain data on the DCTN1 gene, linked to Perry syndrome, with scientific literature in 32 minutes. Disrupting DCTN1 increased expression of cholesterol-making genes, leading GPT-Rosalind to suggest that restoring cholesterol transport could protect neurons from degeneration and provide a testable mechanism for new treatments.
