Analysis

On October 21, 2026, OpenAI announced that its models helped researchers in the Patch the Planet initiative discover critical security flaws in PHP, an open-source programming language used to run an estimated 70 percent of websites.

Over the past two months the company led a coalition of maintainers, researchers and security providers to prepare fixes ahead of disclosure. The fixes required a major change to the PHP engine, enabling every site using PHP to upgrade safely and apply additional mitigations from security vendors. OpenAI described the flaws as one of the most impactful vulnerabilities in recent memory and an example of frontier AI finding security bugs with internet-scale impact ahead of attackers.
