Anthropic: Karpathy Joins as MTS in Flat AI Structure

Anthropic brought in Andrej Karpathy last week as Member of Technical Staff, the same title given to every non-executive technical hire from new grads to ex-Workday CTO Peter Bailis.

AI-native operations replace hierarchy

Steve Yegge’s February interviews with 40 Anthropic employees revealed two operating modes absent from legacy firms. “Hive Mind” uses “Yes, And” layering where contributors pick tasks by interest and pair with AI. “Campfire Mode” keeps the entire team around a live prototype with no owners or Gantt charts, enabling visible progress and instant handoffs.

The model delivered 74 product updates in 52 days and shipped Claude Cowork in ten days. Annualized revenue now sits near $30 billion for roughly 3000 employees. Jack Dorsey and Sequoia’s Roelof Botha argued in their recent essay that AI removes the need for middle layers; Gartner expects 20 percent of firms to cut over half their mid-management roles by year-end.
