ATL Saathi, powered by Google's Gemini AI, aims to transform education in India by empowering teachers to foster innovation among students.
The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog’s flagship initiative to promote innovation in India, has unveiled ATL Saathi, an AI-powered assistant designed to support educators in fostering creativity among students. Powered by Google's Gemini AI, ATL Saathi aims to simplify teaching workflows and drive hands-on innovation in Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs), hubs for STEM education across Indian schools.
Leveraging the Gemini 3.5 Flash model, ATL Saathi provides educators with tailored tools, including AI-generated infographics, interactive quizzes, and step-by-step guides for executing STEM projects. The platform also curates grade-appropriate, curriculum-aligned projects to ignite student curiosity while ensuring safety and precision with detailed assembly instructions and wiring diagrams. According to AIM, these features aim to reduce teachers’ administrative workload, enabling them to focus on mentoring and inspiring students.
Scaling Innovation Across India's Classrooms
ATL Saathi is being piloted in an initial cohort of 100 schools, with plans for broader deployment based on feedback. This aligns with AIM’s broader vision of fostering grassroots innovation. In May 2026, AIM opened applications for 500 new ATLs across Jammu & Kashmir, expanding its footprint into frontier regions. These initiatives are part of AIM 2.0, a government-backed program with a budget of Rs 2,750 crore, approved in December 2024, to scale innovation infrastructure across India by March 2028.
ATLs serve as critical nodes in AIM’s ecosystem, promoting STEM skills, design thinking, and entrepreneurship among school students. With the integration of AI tools like ATL Saathi, these labs are now being transformed into AI-augmented environments where students can tinker, prototype, and solve real-world problems. This push aligns with India’s long-term vision of becoming a global innovation leader by 2047 under the Viksit Bharat initiative.
Gemini AI's Role in Education
Google's Gemini AI, which powers ATL Saathi, represents cutting-edge developments in educational technology. The AI’s ability to generate micro-learning content and adapt to diverse student needs could set a new standard for personalized education. By automating tasks like curriculum translation and project preparation, Gemini frees educators to focus on higher-value activities such as guiding students through complex problem-solving and innovation processes.
This partnership also underscores the growing role of public-private collaboration in India’s technology ecosystem. AIM has frequently engaged with industry leaders to advance its mission, including hosting the GCC Conclave on Innovation 2026 in Bengaluru alongside Software Technology Parks of India (STPI). These efforts aim to bridge the gap between policy, academia, and industry to create a cohesive innovation framework.
Looking Ahead
As ATL Saathi rolls out, its impact on reducing teacher workloads and fostering student creativity will be closely monitored. If successful, the program could serve as a model for deploying AI in education not only across India but in other emerging markets as well. With innovation and entrepreneurship at the center of India’s economic strategy, initiatives like ATL Saathi are crucial in preparing the next generation of leaders and problem solvers.
By empowering educators with advanced tools and expanding access to innovation infrastructure, AIM is reinforcing its commitment to nurturing a culture of STEM-driven creativity. As India moves toward its goal of becoming a global innovation superpower, ATL Saathi represents a step forward in aligning technology, education, and policy for the future.
