BNB Smart Chain (BSC) now finalizes transactions in just 0.65 seconds, a dramatic leap from its 45-second finality in 2022. This 70x improvement, achieved through four years of protocol upgrades, positions BSC as one of the fastest blockchains in the industry. Sub-second finality isn’t just a technical milestone—it could be a game-changer for DeFi, payments, and cross-chain applications.
Finality, in blockchain terms, refers to the point at which a transaction becomes irreversible. Faster finality reduces risks like reorg attacks and improves user experience, especially for applications like trading and payments that rely on near-instant settlement. Historically, BSC required 15 block confirmations (around 45 seconds) to provide practical finality. With the latest upgrades, that process now completes in under a second.
The Four BEPs That Made It Happen
BSC’s journey to 0.65-second finality was marked by a series of carefully sequenced upgrades, each addressing specific bottlenecks:
- BEP-126 (2022): Introduced a finality layer using BLS-signature voting, reducing finality time to 2-3 seconds.
- BEP-590: Stabilized fast finality by extending voting windows to prevent dropped votes, achieving ~0.9-second finality.
- BEP-648 (April 2026): Enabled real-time vote aggregation via an in-memory voting pool, pushing finality to 0.65 seconds with the Osaka/Mendel hard fork.
- BEP-667: Optimized validator voting intervals to support block times approaching 250 milliseconds, setting the stage for future compression.
Key to this achievement was BSC’s layered consensus architecture, which separates block production from finality. This design allowed upgrades to improve finality without sacrificing network liveness—a crucial feature for maintaining uptime during development.
Why Sub-Second Finality Matters
Sub-second finality narrows the gap between blockchain networks and traditional financial systems, enabling new use cases:
- DeFi: Protocols like prediction markets and automated market makers can now operate with near-instant settlement, reducing counterparty risk and allowing tighter spreads.
