BSC accelerator expands startup access to sovereign compute in Spain

Spain’s Barcelona Supercomputing Center is expanding its role in the country’s startup ecosystem as its AI Factory Accelerator Programme moves into full operation after a pilot phase, giving selected companies access to sovereign compute, technical support and training, according to NVIDIA’s Oct. 20, 2026 report and verified BSC and ministry materials. The programme now sits alongside NVIDIA Inception, with some BSC AI Factory services available through the Inception portal, as the two initiatives combine compute access with training, mentoring and startup resources.

Evidence and context

NVIDIA said the AI Factory Accelerator Programme is now in full operation following a pilot initiative and that many participating companies are also members of NVIDIA Inception. The company said Inception complements the BSC programme with NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute open courses, business mentoring, venture capital connections and other resources. NVIDIA also said an upcoming extension of MareNostrum 5, BSC’s public infrastructure for scientific and technological innovation, will provide supercomputing access through the BSC AI Factory and other AI Factories across Europe.

BSC AI Factory is among Europe’s first AI factories and the first in Spain, and BSC says it has delivered more than 800 services to private- and public-sector clients since launching in April 2025. The broader nationwide accelerator is distinct from the earlier Barcelona pilot announced on May 22, 2026, when BSC AI Factory selected 15 AI startups for its pilot initiative, according to BSC.

Startup cohort and technical use cases

NVIDIA highlighted three Inception members named AI Champions at the pilot initiative’s demo day. Qatium, a water-network platform used by more than 250 utilities in 16 countries, is now in early production with its Neural Water Intelligence technology, powered by proprietary AI models trained on MareNostrum 5. NVIDIA said the system is built on NVIDIA accelerated computing, the NVIDIA cuGraph library, the NVIDIA PhysicsNeMo framework and NVIDIA Nemotron open models, and is intended to help water utilities make operational decisions.

OneCareAI, a research spin-off from BSC, used NVIDIA NIM microservices to develop technology designed to identify signs of hidden atrial fibrillation in seemingly normal ECGs, with the aim of helping clinicians identify patients at risk of stroke before one occurs. Avatia built a voice-first, multi-agent system for pharmaceutical companies, using NVIDIA NIM microservices, the NVIDIA Nemotron 3 open model family and the open source NVIDIA NeMo Curator library to support sales representatives and provide doctors with curated information about medicines.

Other BSC AI Factory startups named in NVIDIA’s report include Agrikola AI, Elna Health, Lokutor, Montevive AI, Oppy, Pack2Earth and Up2Smart, spanning precision agriculture, medical imaging and knowledge access, speech services, enterprise security, sales intelligence and sustainable packaging. The report says the cohort reflects applications ranging from stroke prevention and early cancer detection to crop protection and biobased materials.

Nationwide programme details

Background material from the Spanish Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service said on Oct. 15, 2026 that BSC AI Factory had launched its first nationwide accelerator programme for 100 Spanish artificial-intelligence startups. The ministry said the initiative is fully funded and equity-free, backed by €2.3 million in funding, and aims to support 400 Spanish startups over editions in the next two years. It said applications opened on Oct. 13, 2026 and close on Nov. 9, 2026, with the published programme dates set for Dec. 2, 2026 to March 17, 2027.

According to the verified programme details, the 14-week hybrid itinerary targets up to 100 startups, with 25 at each launchpad in Barcelona, Bilbao, Madrid and Málaga. The programme combines business and technical mentoring, including go-to-market strategy, pricing, fundraising, AI-model training, optimisation and distributed-system architecture. BSC says practical MareNostrum 5 access is reserved for teams advancing to the technical phase, and 12 finalists are expected at Demo Day. The eligibility criteria require AI at the core of the business, an existing technically mature product, early commercial validation and both business and technical leadership.

Priority application areas include health, finance and legal services, media, sustainability and climate, and the ministry said NVIDIA and AWS provide technical-partner expertise. One programme page reviewed for background included inconsistent intermediate schedule references and technical-stage cohort counts, but the central open-call page confirmed the Dec. 2, 2026 to March 17, 2027 timetable.
