ENS and Namespace, in collaboration with Celo Foundation and Self Protocol, launch Celonames, a new identity layer offering human-readable names for the Celo ecosystem.
The Celo Foundation, alongside cLabs, has announced the launch of Celonames, a new identity layer in collaboration with Ethereum Name Service (ENS) and Namespace. This initiative aims to provide users within the Celo ecosystem with a personalized, human-readable name, according to the Celo Foundation. This development is set to simplify transactions and interactions within the blockchain space.
From Addresses to Names
Since its inception on Earth Day 2020, Celo has focused on making cryptocurrency accessible to everyday users. With early innovations such as phone-number mapping and fee abstraction, Celo has aimed to make blockchain transactions as intuitive as sending a text. The introduction of Celonames further enhances this user experience by enabling users to own and express their onchain identity.
The new identity layer is integrated with the Self Protocol, a zero-knowledge proof-of-humanity and identity verification system. This integration allows users to verify their real-world identity directly onchain, ensuring that Celonames are not just usernames but verifiable identities that add a layer of trust and authenticity to digital interactions.
Verified Identity, Made Simple
Celonames leverage ENS's naming infrastructure and are supported by Namespace’s robust subname infrastructure, ensuring compatibility across the Ethereum ecosystem. The process of minting a Celoname is streamlined and user-friendly, allowing users to connect their wallet, select a name, and mint it directly onchain. Verified users can mint a Celoname for less than one cent, with the option to renew ownership annually.
Payments for registration and renewals can be made using various cryptocurrencies, including CELO, cUSD, USDC, or USDT, providing users with flexibility in their preferred currency.
Building a Human Layer for Web3
Celonames represent a significant advancement in Celo’s mission to create a Web3 environment that feels familiar and inclusive. By integrating ENS's naming capabilities, Namespace’s tooling, and Self’s verification layer, Celonames facilitate trust, transactions, and connections within the blockchain ecosystem.
