Ethereum Developers Discuss Pectra Testnet and EIP Updates in Latest Meeting

Ethereum developers explored updates to Pectra specifications and EIPs, while also discussing future testnet launches and changes to Ethereum protocols during the All Core Developers Execution Call #202.
In a recent Ethereum All Core Developers Execution (ACDE) Call #202, held on December 19, 2024, key figures in the Ethereum development community gathered to discuss critical updates and future plans for the network. The meeting was chaired by Tim Beiko, Ethereum Foundation Protocol Support Lead, alongside Alex Stokes, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, according to galaxy.com.
Pectra Testnet and Development Focus
One of the focal points of the discussion was the ongoing development of the Pectra testnet. Parithosh Jayanthi, EF Developer Operations Engineer, confirmed that the Mekong testnet, based on Pectra Devnet 4 specifications, remains operational. The client teams are progressing with their implementations for Pectra Devnet 5, with Besu and Teku leading the charge.
The developers aim to finalize the Pectra Devnet 5 specifications soon, with a launch expected around late December or early January. Significant discussions centered around updates to EIP 7742, EIP 7702, EIP 2537, and EIP 2935, which are integral to the Pectra Devnet 5 rollout.
Key EIP Discussions
The meeting also delved into several Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs). EIP 7742, which deals with blob count configuration, is set to be replaced by EIP 7840 for simplicity and efficiency. Meanwhile, EIP 7702 will see changes in its chain_id field to enhance compatibility, and EIP 2537's pricing model for BLS12-381 curve operations was finalized with multiple cost-reducing adjustments.
Further, EIP 2935, concerning historical block hash storage, underwent a security audit that suggested minor modifications to align with other system contracts. Developers agreed to incorporate these changes in the upcoming Pectra Devnet 5 tests.
Future Protocol Adjustments
Developers also prepared for the partial rollout of EIP 4444, which involves history data pruning post-September 2022. The meeting highlighted the need for a robust testing strategy for clients adapting to the new eth/70 networking protocol.
Additionally, discussions around gas and gossip limits brought attention to the potential need for adjustments to ensure block propagation aligns with both fork choice and network rules. These topics are set to continue in asynchronous discussions on platforms like Discord and GitHub.
Announcements and Future Meetings
The developers announced changes to the EIP approval process, introducing new labels such as “Considered for Inclusion” and “Scheduled for Inclusion” to streamline future upgrades. The next ACDE call is scheduled for January 2, with a focus on Pectra testing, following a holiday break.
The meeting concluded with a call for input on potential new working groups and adjustments to the EIP process, signaling ongoing efforts to enhance Ethereum's infrastructure and governance.
