HKMA Supports HKUST's New AI Platform for Financial Innovation

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has expressed its support for the introduction of the InvestLM Generative AI Platform by the School of Business and Management at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST Business School), according to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority. This initiative aims to bolster the capabilities of the local financial services sector, especially for small-to-medium financial institutions, by leveraging the potential of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) technologies.

AI Adoption in Financial Services

The move aligns with the government’s Policy Statement on Responsible Application of Artificial Intelligence in the Financial Market, which encourages an interactive and iterative approach to integrating AI technologies in banking. The HKMA is urging banks to explore GenAI's capabilities to enhance operational efficiency and deliver more personalized customer services. Financial institutions are also encouraged to tailor the InvestLM model to meet specific operational needs while establishing safeguards to mitigate potential risks.

GenAI Sandbox Initiative

The InvestLM model will be accessible through the GenAI Sandbox, a collaborative effort between the HKMA and Cyberport. This sandbox provides a risk-managed environment for banks to pilot innovative GenAI applications, offering essential technical resources and supervisory feedback. It enables banks to explore and fine-tune the InvestLM model, benefiting from the expertise of the HKUST Business School's research team in addressing common GenAI challenges, such as bias and hallucination risks.

Statements from the HKMA

Arthur Yuen, Deputy Chief Executive of the HKMA, emphasized the significance of the GenAI Sandbox as a secure testing ground for banks to experiment with novel AI applications. He highlighted that integrating the InvestLM model into this environment allows banks to develop diverse GenAI use cases while identifying necessary safeguards. This collaboration marks a milestone in the ongoing efforts to promote responsible AI adoption in Hong Kong’s financial industry.
