Paxos has revealed that its Slack-native coding agent, Hoplites, now accounts for 15% of all merged pull requests across the company’s repositories. Since its launch earlier this year, Hoplites has generated over 2,000 pull requests, with more than half successfully merged, according to Paxos' July 29 blog post.
Hoplites stands out in the burgeoning AI-powered development tools sector. This agent operates as an autonomous layer on top of large language models (LLMs), performing tasks beyond basic code completion. It plans, synthesizes, tests, and refines code, creating production-ready pull requests directly from Slack threads. The tool was built in under a month and reportedly costs five times less per pull request than a developer using an AI assistant locally.
The agent is deeply integrated into Paxos' workflows. Users interact with Hoplites by tagging it in Slack threads, where it pulls contextual information from conversations, claims a job, and streams progress updates. The system can even self-correct failing builds by dispatching follow-up jobs to fix errors, a feature Paxos highlights as enabling non-engineers to contribute effectively to development processes.
The launch of Hoplites aligns with a broader industry trend toward autonomous coding agents. Similar platforms like Stripe’s Minions, Ramp’s Inspect, and Spotify’s Honk have also emerged, leveraging Slack as an entry point and pre-warmed cloud sandboxes for execution. However, Paxos opted to build its solution in-house due to limitations in existing third-party tools, such as lack of self-hosting capabilities and extensibility. This decision allowed the company to customize the agent for unique requirements and iterate rapidly.
Hoplites also includes advanced features like task scheduling and steering, integrated directly into Slack. For example, users can schedule recurring tasks like audits or generate automated reports, while adding additional context mid-task is as easy as replying in-thread. These capabilities underscore the tool's role in transforming how teams collaborate on software delivery.
The competition in the AI-driven development tools market is heating up, with platforms like Anthropic’s Claude Slack adapter and GitHub’s Agent HQ gaining traction. Paxos, however, appears confident in its decision to develop Hoplites internally, citing cost efficiency, customization, and faster iteration cycles as key advantages.
Looking ahead, Paxos plans to expand Hoplites' use cases and integrate more complex workflows, aiming to empower both technical and non-technical team members to contribute to software development.
