Stellar (XLM) outlines its strategic approach to enhancing privacy on blockchain, focusing on research, infrastructure, and open-source solutions for enterprises and institutions.

Stellar (XLM) is making significant strides in enhancing privacy within the blockchain ecosystem, focusing on a strategic approach that combines openness with compliance-ready solutions. According to Stellar, this initiative aims to provide enterprises and institutions with configurable privacy options, ensuring they meet regulatory requirements while maintaining transparency.
Supporting Research and Innovation
The Stellar Development Foundation (SDF) has prioritized funding academic research into privacy-preserving applications. The Stellar Community Fund and the Academic Research Grant Program play pivotal roles in this endeavor by supporting projects like Moonlight, a noncustodial privacy solution designed for financial institutions. This initiative is part of a broader effort to bring theoretical privacy concepts into practical application within the Stellar ecosystem.
This year, the Academic Grant Program has backed research on advanced privacy technologies, including homomorphic commitments and non-interactive zero-knowledge proofs. These efforts aim to foster collaboration among developers and researchers, encouraging them to apply for funding and contribute to the ecosystem's growth.
Investing in Core Privacy Infrastructure
Stellar's commitment to privacy extends to developing core infrastructure. The SDF is working to integrate foundational zero-knowledge (ZK) infrastructure into Stellar. This includes a partnership with Nethermind to incorporate the Risc Zero zkVM verifier into Sorobon, facilitating the verification of zkVM-proven programs. Such developments are intended to make privacy primitives as accessible as any other network feature.
Future protocol releases will focus on privacy enhancements, introducing confidential token properties and ZK proof verification. Proposed advancements include new host functions to support homomorphic encryption and ZK-friendly hash functions, laying the groundwork for efficient privacy-preserving applications.
Building Open-Source Solutions
The SDF is also advancing open-source privacy solutions by developing prototypes like Confidential Tokens. These initiatives aim to provide the ecosystem with tools that can be refined and deployed, addressing institutional concerns about illicit finance while preserving user privacy.
In collaboration with the Confidential Token Association and founding members such as OpenZeppelin and Zama, Stellar is developing a framework for integrating confidentiality into commonly used token standards. Additionally, Stellar and Nethermind are exploring private payment solutions and innovative anti-abuse mechanisms, enhancing the practical applications of privacy on the network.
Through these strategic initiatives, Stellar envisions a future where privacy on its network is driven by the ecosystem and owned by the community, ensuring robust standards and applications that meet the evolving needs of its users.
