The Impact of AI and LLMs on the Future of Cybersecurity

AI and LLMs Revolutionizing Cybersecurity

Generative AI and LLMs (Large Language Models) have the potential to bring about significant changes in the field of cybersecurity. This was the focal point of a recent discussion between a16z General Partner Zane Lackey, a16z Partner Joel de la Garza, and Derrick Harris on the AI + a16z podcast.

They explained why the AI hype is legitimate in this context, as it could help security teams cut through the noise and automate tasks that often lead to mistakes. Lackey noted that many security teams are excited about the potential of AI and LLMs to alleviate their workload.

Challenges and Opportunities in Security Foundation Models

Discussing security foundation models, de la Garza highlighted the reluctance of companies to share security data for training these models. This reluctance stems from the sensitive nature of such data, as it often includes incidents that companies prefer to keep confidential.

However, de la Garza also noted significant improvements in the infrastructure required to run these models. The release of open source models, he said, is driving the development of meaningful open source and opening the door for a lot of innovation.

The CISO Perspective on AI in Cybersecurity

Lackey also spoke about the perspective of CISOs (Chief Information Security Officers) on the impact of generative AI on their organizations and the industry as a whole. He suggested that while most CISOs understand the technology, they are trying to fully comprehend its implications, including the changes it brings to threat factors.

However, this understanding is continually challenged by the rapid pace of change in the field. Even if a CISO were able to get up to speed a few months ago, the landscape would look significantly different now, and it will continue to evolve in the future.
