Anthropic expands GSA deal with 40% discount for government users
Anthropic said its expanded GSA agreement gives government buyers a 40% discount on Claude products and may save $1 billion.
Anthropic said on Tuesday it is expanding its partnership with the U.S. General Services Administration, extending a 40% discount on Claude Enterprise, Claude for Government and the Claude API to government customers across more procurement channels. The company said the agreement now covers direct purchases and, in coming months, sales through cloud providers, and also applies to state, local, tribal and territorial governments.
Evidence and context
In the company’s announcement dated Oct. 27, 2026, Anthropic said the expanded OneGov arrangement is intended to lower the cost of access for agencies that face tight budgets and long procurement cycles. The company said agencies are not bound by a minimum spend commitment and will pay only for usage consumed. Anthropic estimated the discounts offered through the agreement could save the government $1 billion.
Anthropic said approximately 500 U.S. federal, state and local government organizations now use Claude. It said weekly Claude for Government active users are up about eightfold since February, and usage across federal civilian agencies has grown about 20-fold in a year. Those figures were presented by the company without independent verification in the source material.
The announcement follows other GSA government AI purchasing moves this year, including a Sept. 10, 2026, disclosure that GSA expanded OneGov AI offerings with discounted, consumption-based access to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. A separate GSA update on April 29, 2026, said OneGov saved taxpayers $1.1 billion in its first year.
Security and deployment details
Anthropic said Claude for Government was generally available on Sept. 30 and is offered at a FedRAMP High authorization level with near-feature parity to commercial offerings. The company said agencies can also use Claude through Amazon Bedrock or Google Cloud’s Vertex AI, with FedRAMP High authorization on both platforms and select models authorized for DoD IL4 and IL5 workloads in AWS GovCloud on Bedrock.
The company also said Claude Enterprise is in process for FedRAMP Moderate authorization through the FedRAMP 20x program. Anthropic said it is launching a dedicated program to help agencies implement Claude and make use of the system, and that it plans to bring practices it says are common among private-sector customers to public-sector users in the coming weeks.
Anthropic’s post highlighted examples of public-sector use, including a Utah pilot involving 34 developers across 10 state agencies, where the company said 80% had a working environment within 30 minutes and 71% reported saving more than 20 hours by the end of a four-week trial. The company also cited examples involving ransomware response, vulnerability detection, legacy code documentation and migration work. Those examples were attributed to Anthropic in the announcement and were not independently verified in the source material.
The GSA’s role in the agreement is as a procurement intermediary and negotiator under its OneGov strategy, which coordinates governmentwide technology buying through mechanisms such as the Multiple Award Schedule. Anthropic said agencies can begin buying Claude through GSA’s Multiple Award Schedule immediately. The timing of any next procurement milestone beyond that is not specified in the source material.
