Chris Alexiuk Champions Open AI Through NVIDIA's Nemotron Models

Chris Alexiuk, a senior product research engineer in deep learning at NVIDIA, is making waves in the AI community by championing open-source large language models (LLMs). Based in Toronto, Alexiuk specializes in helping developers build, fine-tune, evaluate, and deploy practical AI applications using open models. His advocacy for transparency in AI development is rooted in his belief that openness is essential for democratizing intelligence.

Advancing Open AI with NVIDIA Nemotron

Alexiuk has become a prominent advocate for NVIDIA's Nemotron family of open-source, multimodal models. These models are designed for a range of applications, from high-frequency execution tasks to long-running autonomous agents and enterprise-level research. "I think Nemotron is the most important project that exists," Alexiuk stated, emphasizing the importance of providing access to model weights, training data, and recipes for reproducibility and customization.

Nemotron models, such as the Nemotron 3.5 Lightning and Nemotron Ultra, cater to diverse user needs. For example, Nemotron Ultra supports long-running, self-evolving AI agents, while Nemotron 3.5 Super VL offers multimodal reasoning capabilities, handling text, images, documents, and video. According to NVIDIA, Nemotron 3.5 Super VL achieves 63.44% on the Hermes Bench and 87.05% on LangChain Evals, outperforming previous iterations.

Teaching and Community Engagement

Alexiuk has built a significant following on platforms like YouTube and X (formerly Twitter), where he shares tutorials under the handle "llm_wizard." His approachable teaching style has made complex AI concepts accessible to thousands of developers. "Trying to get knowledge and information out to as many people as humanly possible is what continues to drive me," he said.

In addition to his online presence, Alexiuk has coauthored technical articles and conducted hands-on tutorials. For example, his July 23, 2026, guide on customizing Nemotron 3 Nano with Prime Intellect Lab demonstrated how developers could set up and track learning processes in just minutes.

From Bird Classifiers to AI Advocacy

Alexiuk's journey into AI began during a computational physics class at Trent University in Ontario, where he developed a webcam-based bird classifier as a personal project. This early experience sparked a lifelong passion for machine learning. Reflecting on his career, Alexiuk remarked, "To imagine within the span of a few years going from freaking out because I could know my friend’s bird was in the camera frame to being able to make any website in a matter of minutes with a model that’s running on my laptop — I cannot wait to see what’s next."

Through his work, Alexiuk continues to inspire and empower developers to explore the possibilities of open AI. "It would be the greatest day of my life to be surpassed by an even bigger fan of Nemotron," he said, underscoring his commitment to fostering a vibrant and inclusive AI community.
