GitHub has announced a significant update to its Copilot coding agent by introducing support for .instructions.md files, according to the GitHub Blog. This enhancement allows developers to provide more detailed and tailored instructions for different parts of their codebase, aiming to improve the quality of generated pull requests.
New Customization Capabilities
The Copilot coding agent now supports .instructions.md files stored under the .github/instructions directory, alongside the existing .github/copilot-instructions.md files. These instructions can be customized using YAML frontmatter, enabling developers to specify applicable files or directories. This feature provides a more granular control over how Copilot interacts with various components of a project, allowing for differentiated guidance across the codebase.
Improved Efficiency and Task Management

Availability and Integration
Currently available in public preview, the Copilot coding agent is accessible to users with Copilot Pro, Copilot Pro+, Copilot Business, and Copilot Enterprise subscriptions, provided an administrator has enabled the necessary policy. It is integrated into various platforms, including github.com, multiple IDEs, GitHub Mobile, the GitHub CLI, and the GitHub MCP Server, offering flexibility in task delegation from diverse environments.
