GitHub outlines agentic software delivery vision at Universe 2026
GitHub used Universe 2026 to detail new Copilot features, infrastructure upgrades and a broader push toward agentic software delivery.
GitHub used its Universe 2026 conference on Oct. 28 to present a broader plan for how software work is organized, saying developers are moving from writing code line by line to orchestrating AI assistants and fleets of agents. In a post published the same day, GitHub said its goal is to become "the most comprehensive software delivery system in the world," with completed work, not more code, as the main output.
What GitHub said it is building
In the announcement, GitHub described an "agentic software delivery system" built around three priorities: velocity, intelligence and quality. The company said developers set direction and remain accountable for what ships, while agents implement and verify changes across the software development lifecycle. GitHub said the system is meant to support work triggered by code changes, colleague requests or production metrics, rather than a strictly linear path from planning to deployment.
Among the new products and features shown at Universe, GitHub highlighted the GitHub Copilot app, which it said is designed for work from issue to merge in a single surface. The company said the app can also be used to write specs, present design discussions or analyze telemetry. GitHub also introduced Copilot Fusion, which it said evaluates task requirements across reasoning, code generation, debugging and tool use, then selects one or more models to execute the work.
GitHub said that in the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, Fusion Max scored within two points of Opus 5.5 Max at half the cost and 40% less time per task. The company also said Copilot code review Max posted the highest F1 score on ReviewBench for high-severity issues, while Lite and Balanced remain available for faster routine reviews.
Infrastructure and pricing changes
GitHub said it has added 4 million CPU cores, 160 petabytes of high-speed storage and 50 terabits per second of network capacity so far this year. It also said it is migrating to a multi-region deployment in Azure and expects to complete that migration early next year. The company said the added capacity is only part of the effort, and that it is also changing architecture to support the higher throughput and reliability demands of agentic development.
The post said GitHub is rebuilding its underlying Git architecture around three principles: simplify the primitives, decouple storage from compute, and minimize coordination. It also said GitHub Enterprise customers can now use all Copilot features without buying a separate subscription, paying instead for the AI credits they use. GitHub said the change is available through GitHub Sales now, with self-serve coming soon, and that existing Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise customers can keep their current plans or move later.
Why it matters
The announcement signals how GitHub is positioning itself as AI-assisted software development becomes more automated and more distributed across tools, surfaces and models. The company framed the shift as one in which developers work more often as operators and decision-makers, while agents handle execution, verification and continuous learning inside the platform. GitHub also stressed that its tools remain open and extensible, naming third-party services including Cloudflare, Datadog and Figma.
Verified event details indicate GitHub Universe 2026 is taking place Oct. 28-29 in San Francisco, with online participation available. The opening keynote was scheduled for Oct. 28 at 9:00 a.m., and a separate Day of Learning is scheduled for Oct. 30 at GitHub headquarters. The official sources reviewed here did not provide an independently verified list of all keynote launches beyond GitHub's own announcement, so any additional product claims should be treated as unconfirmed unless separately documented.
