Supermicro Unveils NVIDIA BlueField JBOF for Enhanced AI Storage Solutions

The ever-increasing demand for artificial intelligence (AI) is reshaping the landscape of computing and storage technologies. According to the NVIDIA Technical Blog, the need for efficient storage solutions is more critical than ever, with AI workloads requiring high-bandwidth access to vast amounts of data and low-latency performance. Addressing these challenges, Supermicro has launched a new Just a Bunch Of Flash (JBOF) solution powered by NVIDIA's BlueField data processing unit (DPU).

Innovative DPU-Powered Storage

Supermicro's new JBOF marks a departure from traditional storage server designs. The NVIDIA BlueField DPU integrates networking, storage, security, and management functionalities into a single chip, eliminating the need for separate CPU, memory, and networking components. This integration allows for direct data movement between SSDs and high-speed network ports, significantly reducing latency and enhancing efficiency.

The BlueField DPU can handle up to 400 Gb/s of network traffic and supports NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF) storage protocols, among others. It acts as the PCIe root complex to manage SSDs, allowing the JBOF to function as block, file, or object storage, which can be scaled out as needed.

Supermicro's Advanced JBOF Design

Supermicro's latest JBOF offers a flexible architecture, accommodating either 36 E3.S SSDs or 24 U.2 SSDs, with a raw capacity reaching up to 1.44 PB. Future enhancements are expected to raise this capacity to 2 PB with newer SSDs. The system supports dual controller canisters, each capable of housing two BlueField-3 DPUs and one NVIDIA GPU, providing options for high availability or cost-efficient configurations.

Performance testing of the BlueField-powered JBOF demonstrated a 13% reduction in latency for small-block random read workloads and significant power savings, making it an ideal choice for both AI training and high-performance computing (HPC) applications.

Collaborations and Future Prospects

In alignment with the new JBOF, Supermicro is collaborating with various partners such as Cloudian, Hammerspace, Kioxia, and Micron. These partnerships aim to integrate the JBOF into scalable storage solutions, enhancing object storage and file system support for extensive AI and HPC workloads.

Cloudian and Hammerspace provide software solutions that leverage the BlueField DPU's capabilities for optimized storage performance and efficiency. Meanwhile, Kioxia and Micron offer SSD options tailored to different performance and cost requirements, ensuring the JBOF meets diverse customer needs.

Showcase at OCP Global Summit

The new Supermicro JBOF will be showcased at the OCP Global Summit in San Jose, California, from October 15-17, 2024. Attendees can explore the innovative storage solution at Supermicro's booth and attend a session on DPU-powered AI storage presented by Supermicro and NVIDIA.
