Tether Gold (XAU₮) Holdings Surge 9.5% in Q2 Amid Gold Price Decline

Tether Gold (XAU₮), the largest tokenized gold product by market capitalization, recorded a 9.5% increase in holdings during Q2 2026, according to Tether's latest attestation report. This growth came as gold prices fell 14.1% during the quarter, underscoring strong demand for tokenized gold amid market volatility.

By the end of Q2, XAU₮ tokens represented 707,747.139 fine troy ounces of physical gold, equivalent to approximately 22.01 metric tonnes. Each XAU₮ token is fully backed 1:1 by physical gold stored in Swiss vaults. The total market value of these reserves stood at $2.837 billion as of June 30, 2026.

Despite gold closing Q2 at $4,008.02 per ounce, its lowest point in over a year, investors bought 53,225 additional XAU₮ tokens during the quarter. This added 1.66 tonnes of gold to token holders' ownership, reflecting a growing appetite for on-chain, gold-backed assets even during price corrections.

Demand for Tokenized Gold Amid Volatility

"Q2 offered a clear test of the underlying demand for Tether Gold," said Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether. "Even as gold experienced its sharpest quarterly correction in 13 years, customers continued to accumulate XAU₮. This highlights the expanding role tokenized gold can play in the global financial system."

Unlike traditional gold investments, XAU₮ provides liquidity and portability through blockchain technology. Holders can trade or transfer tokens seamlessly while maintaining full transparency over the underlying physical reserves.

Strategic Moves and Market Position

Tether's gold holdings now place it among the world's largest gold purchasers. During the first half of 2026, Tether International SA de CV acquired 27.1 tonnes of gold, averaging 4.5 tonnes per month. If ranked alongside central banks, Tether’s gold reserves would position it third globally during this period, behind Poland and China.

Amid this growth, Tether has also been expanding its gold-based offerings. In June 2026, the company announced plans to wind down its Alloy platform, an overcollateralized lending product backed by XAU₮, by September 17. This move aligns with Tether’s focus on simplifying its product suite while maintaining robust support for XAU₮.

Current Market Snapshot

As of September 2, 2026, XAU₮ is trading at $4,367.71, reflecting a 2.51% daily drop. Its market capitalization hovers around $2.68 billion, with approximately 610,000 tokens in circulation, according to CoinGecko data. Despite gold’s recent price weakness, the token's resilience highlights its appeal as a stable, asset-backed digital currency.

With a strong Q2 performance and growing market adoption, Tether Gold remains a leader in the tokenized real-world asset space. Its ability to attract demand during both bullish and bearish gold markets signals a maturing use case for blockchain-based commodities.
