USDC and CCTP Integration Announced for Sui Blockchain

Native USDC and the Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) are set to be integrated into the Sui blockchain, according to Circle. This development will significantly enhance Sui's decentralized finance (DeFi) and gaming ecosystems, which already host over 85 applications.

Sui Blockchain and Its Ecosystem

Sui is a layer-1 (L1) blockchain known for its fast, secure, scalable, and affordable infrastructure. It is designed for developers building on-chain applications, including DeFi, gaming, decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN), and ecommerce. The blockchain is based on the Move programming language, making it the first of its kind to support native USDC and CCTP.

Native USDC and Its Benefits

With the integration of native USDC, developers on Sui will be able to utilize the largest regulated dollar-backed stablecoin in the industry. Some notable benefits of native USDC include:

  • Regulated, fully reserved, and redeemable 1:1 for US dollars
  • Enables institutional on/off-ramps like Circle Mint for eligible users
  • Easy integration into existing decentralized applications (dApps)

Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP)

The Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol will allow developers to design cross-chain experiences by connecting their Sui apps to other blockchains such as Arbitrum, Base, Ethereum, Solana, and more. CCTP offers a secure and capital-efficient way to transact with USDC across supported blockchains without locking up liquidity.

Developers will be able to:

  • Enable users to move native USDC securely between nine blockchains across 72 routes with 1:1 capital efficiency
  • Build apps that facilitate transactions across MoveVM, EVM, SVM, and Cosmos SDK blockchains
  • Enable seamless cross-chain onboarding, swaps, purchases, treasury rebalancing, and more while maintaining a mainstream user experience

Transition from Bridged USDC to Native USDC

Currently, bridged USDC from Ethereum is the largest stablecoin on Sui, with more than $260 million in circulation as of September 16, 2024. Sui will collaborate with ecosystem apps, such as Wormhole, to ensure a smooth transition of liquidity from bridged USDC to native USDC over time. The Ethereum-bridged form of USDC will be renamed to “wUSDC” on block explorers, and ecosystem apps will be encouraged to make similar changes in their user interfaces and documentation.

Technical Details

For developers, the mainnet and testnet addresses for native USDC and bridged USDC (Wormhole) are provided:
