CCN Took a Full U-Turn on its Shutdown Decision

Cryptocurrency news outlet CCN.com has U-turned its previous decision of shutdown, revealed by the Founder Jonas Borchgrevink in the website 12 June.

Formerly known as CryptoCoinNews, CCN announced its shutdown decision on 10 June and the culprit being the Google’s June 2019 Core Update.

What is Google’s June 2019 Core Update?

Google released a broad core algorithm update in June aiming to improve the search experience for users. While Google did not disclose the details of the algorithm update, they highlight that search rater have no control on page ranking in Google and rater data is not used in Google’s algorithm. Rater’s opinion is like feedback card from diners sent to restaurants, helping Google to assess if their “recipes” (search tools) are working properly. In addition, Google suggests all content providers should review their search quality rater guidelines to deliver high quality content to the readers.

Unexpected Drop in Traffic?

Since Google’s June 2019 core update, CCN claimed that its mobile traffic had been dropped by more than 71% overnight and its daily revenue has dropped by more than 90% (see Exhibit 1). Besides, CoinDesk also experienced a 34.6% drop, as reported by CCN on 10 June.

Apart from crypto and blockchain media outlets, traditional news websites have also experienced a significant drop in its visibility (see Exhibit 2).

One of the major British news providers – The Daily Mail has suffered a loss of 43% in visibility. As confirmed by Mail Online, Jesus Mendez wrote a post on the Google Webmasters Forum saying that dailymail.co.uk has experienced 50% lost in search traffic, in addition to a 90% drop in Google Discover feed traffic (see Exhibit 3).

Not all media outlets are losers following the Google Core Update. Mirror.co.uk and thesun.co.uk appear to gain a significant increase in their visibility after the Google’s June 2019 Core Update (see Exhibit 4).

CCN: Reason for U-Turn?

“CryptoCoinsNews.com”, an obsolete domain name of CCN since 2017, is reappearing in Google searches and is inexplicably using recent articles from CCN.com. While this is an unexpected result for the CCN team, CCN team is working on visibility issues since the Google’s June 2019 Core Update
