First Digital's FDUSD stablecoin is now listed on the Sui Network, marking its expansion into DeFi and interoperability with non-EVM chains.
First Digital Group has announced the listing of its stablecoin, First Digital USD (FDUSD), on the Sui Network. This marks FDUSD's expansion into the burgeoning sector of decentralized finance (DeFi) and its first integration with a non-EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine) blockchain.
FDUSD's issuer, FD121 Limited, a subsidiary of First Digital, has built a reputation for the stablecoin as a trusted asset within the crypto space. Since its launch in mid-2023, FDUSD has achieved a significant market presence with a market capitalization reaching approximately US$3.5 billion. The stablecoin boasts a strong trading volume, with notable activity in early April where it recorded over US$8 billion in trades within a 24-hour period.
The stablecoin distinguishes itself with a firm backing by cash or cash equivalents, with reserves held in regulated financial institutions. These holdings are subject to regular independent audits, ensuring transparency and trust for its users. FDUSD is also engineered to be a programmable currency, focusing on interoperability across different blockchain platforms, which could contribute to reduced transaction costs and enhanced security and efficiency in financial transactions.
The announcement, made during the Sui Basecamp event at Paris Blockchain Week, demonstrates First Digital's intent to remain at the forefront of digital asset innovation. Vincent Chok, CEO of First Digital, remarked on the listing as a testament to the company's dedication to the evolution of the digital asset space. The Sui Network, known for its unique transaction processing that aims to improve performance, decrease latency, and scale effectively, represents a strategic partner in this endeavor.
First Digital Group, originating from Legacy Trust Company, has emerged as a prominent player in the field of digital asset custody and trust services. Since becoming an independent entity in 2019, the Hong Kong-based corporation has expanded its influence across Asia. First Digital Trust, the custody and trust arm of the group, gained recognition in HSBC's 'Emerging Giants in Asia Pacific' Report 2022, while First Digital Labs, the innovation subsidiary, is the entity responsible for issuing FDUSD.
The Sui Network, which FDUSD has joined, is pioneering a novel approach to blockchain technology with its Layer 1 blockchain and smart contract platform. It utilizes an object-centric model powered by the Move programming language, which allows for parallel execution, quick finality, and the capacity to support a diverse range of applications. Its horizontally scalable architecture is designed to handle the demands of a Web3 environment, promising speed and affordability for developers and users alike.
The integration of FDUSD onto the Sui Network is expected to provide developers, entrepreneurs, and investors with additional options for engaging with digital assets in a secure and trusted manner. As the DeFi landscape continues to evolve, the collaboration between First Digital and Sui indicates a commitment to fostering innovation and accessibility in the world of digital finance.
