Visa, the payment giant has acquired a fintech firm Plaid for a sum of $5.3 billion, this was announced in a press release which was published January 13.

 

The report stated that Plaid has been able to create a network to connect their financial accounts to the software applications which they use to manage their daily financial lives.

 

The press release stated that 75% of internet consumers in the rely on the use of fintech applications to transfer funds in this regard the

Chairman and CEO of Visa said that:

 

"It has become increasingly important to facilitate consumers’ ability to use fintech applications.”

He also said:

 

“Plaid is a leader in the fast growing fintech world with best-in-class capabilities and talent. The acquisition, combined with our many fintech efforts already underway, will position Visa to deliver even more value for developers, financial institutions and consumers.”

Visa states that the acquisition of Plaid will further facilitate its ability to work more closely with other fintech firms. According to Kelly, it would also help Visa's effort to transition from just connecting buyers and sellers to being a bridge between consumers and fintech services.

 

Visa's move to acquire Plaid is still subject to regulatory and customary closing conditions, all of which have no impact on the stock buyback program or dividend policy previously announced by Visa. In a period of three to six months from now, the deal is expected to be closed.

 

The payments giant has been seen to show interest in the innovations related to the financial technology sector. In the final quarter of 2019, Kelly had made public that the company was still in discussions with Facebook concerning Libra, regardless of the tension the project was receiving from regulatory bodies.
