Taiwan's top tech companies leverage NVIDIA Metropolis and NIM to enhance industrial automation and factory efficiency.
Taiwan’s leading consumer electronics giants are making significant strides in AI automation for manufacturing, as fleets of robots and millions of cameras and sensors drive efficiencies across smart factories, according to NVIDIA Blog.
Notable electronics manufacturers such as Foxconn, Pegatron, and Wistron showcased their use of NVIDIA software at the COMPUTEX event in Taipei, highlighted during NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang’s keynote address.
Creating Factory Autonomy
As production challenges increase, manufacturers are turning factories into autonomous machines using generative AI and digital twins. AI agents driven by large language models (LLMs) are being developed to assist on warehouse floors, boosting productivity and enhancing safety. Digital twins are used to simulate and develop AI-powered automation before deployment in actual factories.
Foxconn and its subsidiary Ingrasys utilize NVIDIA Omniverse and Metropolis to create digital twins for factories, optimizing efficiency and safety. At COMPUTEX, Foxconn demonstrated how digital twins can optimize video camera placements in factories to enhance data capture for key insights.
Bringing Generative AI to the Factory Floor
Generative AI is revolutionizing productivity across industries. McKinsey Research forecasts that generative AI could bring up to $290 billion in value to the advanced manufacturing industry and contribute $4.4 trillion annually to the global economy.
In March, NVIDIA launched NVIDIA NIM, a set of microservices aimed at accelerating generative AI deployment in enterprises. Supporting a wide range of AI models, NIM enables seamless, scalable AI inferencing on-premises or in the cloud, utilizing industry-standard APIs.
Billions of IoT devices worldwide can leverage Metropolis and NVIDIA NIM to improve AI perception and enhance their capabilities.
Advancing Manufacturing With NVIDIA NIM
Linker Vision, an AI vision insights specialist, is adopting NVIDIA NIM to help factories deploy AI agents capable of responding to natural language queries. The Taipei-based company uses NVIDIA Visual Insight Agent (VIA) in manufacturing environments for continuous video feed monitoring of factory floors. These ChatGPT-like systems allow operators to ask for video monitoring to gain insights and safety alerts, such as when workers are not wearing hardhats.
Leading manufacturer Pegatron, which manages over 20 million square feet of factory space and processes more than 15 million assemblies per month, has announced efforts based on NVIDIA NIM. Pegatron is using Metropolis multi-camera tracking workflows to enhance worker safety and productivity on factory lines. Their workflow integrates digital twins in Omniverse and real-time AI from Metropolis to optimize operations.
Boosting Automated Visual Inspections
The adoption of NVIDIA Metropolis is helping Taiwan’s largest electronics manufacturers streamline operations and reduce costs as they build and inspect complex and high-volume products.
Quality control with manual inspections poses a multitrillion-dollar challenge. While automated optical inspection (AOI) systems have been in use, legacy systems have high false detection rates, necessitating costly manual verifications.
NVIDIA Metropolis for Factories offers an advanced AI workflow for developing accurate AOI inspection applications more swiftly.
TRI, Taiwan’s leading AOI equipment maker, announced the integration of NVIDIA Metropolis for Factories into its latest AOI systems and plans to use NVIDIA NIM to further optimize system performance.
Wistron is expanding its OneAI platform for visual inspection and AOI with Metropolis. OneAI is deployed in over 10 Wistron factories globally, spanning hundreds of inspection points.
At COMPUTEX, MediaTek, a prominent innovator in connectivity and multimedia, announced a collaboration with NVIDIA. MediaTek will integrate NVIDIA TAO training and pretrained models into its AI development workflow for IoT device customers. This partnership aims to bring Metropolis and advanced AI to billions of IoT far-edge devices, streamlining software development for MediaTek’s growth in edge IoT.
