Bitcoin swept to $80K and bids refilled as overhead supply built
Glassnode said Bitcoin swept to about $80K on Oct. 15, with ETF and treasury bids refilling and overhead supply clustered near $85K-$87.5K.
Bitcoin was swept down to about $80,000 on October 15, then found buyers quickly at a level that sits just under the average cost basis of U.S. spot ETF holders and corporate treasuries, according to Glassnode’s week-on-chain report published October 21, 2026. The move matters because the same zone has now acted as both support and a test of demand, while heavier supply remains above the market.
Evidence and context
Glassnode said the deepest dip on October 15 reached an hourly close of $80.1K before the next hourly close recovered back above the U.S. spot ETF cost basis. The firm described that line as the average price the ETFs paid for the coins they hold. It added that treasury companies tracked in the report hold Bitcoin at an estimated average cost of about $80.2K, derived from holdings and unrealized profit. Both cost bases sit between about $80K and $81.5K, making the October 15 sweep a test of two of the largest holder groups at once.
The report said bids on the Binance spot book that had been concentrated at $80K were largely taken out in the sweep, but had refilled by October 20, though at a smaller size than at their peak. Above the market, the main block of asks sits between about $86.5K and $87.5K, while liquidation clusters have shifted higher as well, with the two largest bands near $85K and $87K. Glassnode said a move toward $87K could accelerate if short positions are forced to close, but that same area also coincides with visible supply on the order book.
On-chain supply overhead remains important. Glassnode said the 6- to 12-month holder cohort now has a cost basis near $86.7K, down from about $88K in the prior week’s report, while 1- to 2-year holders sit near $100K. Selling from those groups has eased, but the 6- to 12-month cost basis now sits inside the zone of asks and liquidation clusters near $87K. The firm said a daily close above $86.7K would put that cohort back in profit on average and clear the nearest band of supply overhead.
ETF flows also turned positive again. Glassnode reported about $653 million of net inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs on October 19, their largest day since September 22, after a week of net outflows. It said that inflow came on thin volume, with the funds trading less that day than on a typical day over the past year and with 30-day average volume still less than a quarter of its level a year ago. The firm noted that repeated inflows on rising volume would be a better sign that demand is broadening.
Profit taking has eased too. Glassnode said realized profit slowed over the past week to about half its pace in the week of the September high, while realized losses held steady. It said the largest losses in the past week came in the 24 hours to the morning of October 15 as price slid toward $80K. The report added that a renewed rise in profit taking near $87K would be an early sign that sellers are returning at the top of the range.
Macro and event risk
The report also pointed to two dated catalysts. The Federal Reserve is due to decide on rates on October 28, and MSCI will publish its final list of index removals on November 11, with changes effective at the close on November 30. Glassnode said MSCI adopted new rules for non-operating companies on October 15 after the U.S. close, and that Strategy and Metaplanet were flagged in a test run on May data published with the consultation in August. It said Strategy’s shares fell nearly 10% on October 16, while Bitcoin barely moved, and warned that a removal could force index-tracking funds to sell the stock even as treasury companies are already buying far less Bitcoin than earlier in the cycle.
Glassnode said altcoin leverage has cooled from recent highs, with coin froth and global froth falling out of their high zones after the October 15 Bitcoin sweep. Funding rates also eased, with fewer than 5% of altcoins now paying above the neutral rate, down from close to a quarter in late September. Open positions are only about 5% below their October peak at constant prices, which the report said leaves room for leverage to build again if sentiment turns.
The report’s data are as of October 21, 2026 for hourly price, realized profit and loss, the liquidation heatmap and the Binance order book; October 20 for daily on-chain metrics, altcoin froth, altcoin funding and macro series; and October 19 for ETF flows, the ETF cost basis, the True Market Mean and corporate treasury holdings. The firm said the most recent daily points remain subject to revision.
