GitHub has improved the visibility of contributing guidelines by adding them to the repository tab and sidebar, streamlining onboarding and enhancing community engagement.

In a significant move to enhance user experience, GitHub has announced the improved visibility of contributing guidelines within repositories, aiming to facilitate easier onboarding for new contributors. According to GitHub, the guidelines are now prominently featured in the repository tab and sidebar, making them more accessible to users.
Improved Accessibility for New Contributors
The update addresses a common issue faced by new contributors who often struggle to locate contributing guidelines within repositories. Previously, the poor discoverability of these files created barriers, limiting community growth and the onboarding process. By surfacing the guidelines in two key areas, GitHub aims to reduce friction for newcomers and enhance the overall community engagement.
Key Locations for Contributing Guidelines
The contributing guidelines are now visible in two strategic locations:
- Repository Overview: A new 'Contributing' tab has been added alongside existing tabs such as 'README' and 'Code of Conduct'.
- Repository Sidebar: A 'Contributing' link is now included in the repository sidebar.
These elements will appear whenever a repository contains a CONTRIBUTING.md
file, eliminating the need for users to search for it manually. This change is expected to help new contributors get started more quickly and streamline the onboarding process for open-source projects.
Community Feedback and Engagement
In addition to these changes, GitHub encourages community feedback to further refine the user experience. Users are invited to share their thoughts and report any issues they encounter through the GitHub Community discussion platform. This initiative underscores GitHub's commitment to fostering an inclusive and participatory open-source ecosystem.
The update is part of GitHub's ongoing efforts to improve the platform's usability and support the growth of open-source communities by making it easier for new contributors to engage and collaborate effectively.
