The Hong Kong Monetary Authority reports a slight improvement in SME credit conditions for Q3 2024, with fewer businesses facing tighter credit approval stances.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has released its latest survey results, indicating a slight improvement in credit conditions for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) during the third quarter of 2024. The findings, published on November 4, suggest a more favorable credit environment for SMEs compared to previous quarters.
Improved Credit Approval Perception
According to the survey, 76% of respondents perceived a "similar" or "easier" credit approval stance from banks, a slight increase from 73% in the previous quarter. Conversely, the percentage of SMEs perceiving a "more difficult" credit approval stance decreased from 27% to 24%. These perceptions, however, may not fully represent the actual challenges SMEs face in securing bank credit, as they can be influenced by various factors including media reports and personal opinions.
Existing Credit Lines and New Applications
For SMEs with existing credit lines, only 1% reported a "tighter" stance from banks, a reduction from 2% in the prior quarter. This term "tighter" encompasses a range of measures such as reduced credit limits and increased interest rates. Meanwhile, among the 3% of SMEs that applied for new credit, 79% reported fully or partially successful applications, an improvement from 70% in the previous quarter.
Survey Methodology and Caution
The survey, conducted quarterly by the Hong Kong Productivity Council on behalf of the HKMA, covers approximately 2,500 SMEs across various sectors. It aims to provide insights into the demand-side perspective of SMEs' access to bank credit. However, the HKMA advises caution in interpreting the results due to the small sample sizes and potential sentiment shifts influenced by specific events.
For detailed tables and technical information, the survey results are available on the HKPC website.
The findings underscore the ongoing efforts to monitor and enhance the financial ecosystem for SMEs, a critical component of Hong Kong's economy.
